My friend Julia and I spent the evening at the 2nd Fridays Gallery Night in the Chicago Arts District in Pilsen. Eighteen artists’ galleries and studios opened their doors to the public, sharing their current exhibits.
I especially enjoyed the International Sculpture Center, which is currently displaying award-winning student work. I was drawn to this dirt carpet, originally installed outdoors in front of a park bench, by Trudy Rogers-Denham. A rug typically signifies cleanliness and protection, but an intricate rug made of soil symbolizes the fragility of domestic life.
