I work in advertising. I play in the kitchen.

I’m part tweenager. (Look at my iTunes playlist.)

I’m part Grandma. (Look at my oversize cardi collection.)

I’m part Romy or Michelle. (Look at the height of my hair.)

I love the Lord even more than I love cheese. So, a lot.

I wish my life were a musical, but other than that, I’m pretty content.

When you’re inside a master story at a particular time in history, you tend to accept its definition of reality.

Today we have Annie from Live Simply who shares with us some great tips on how to organize our baubles!

—

Hi GOLP! Many of you are most likely well versed in styling your jewelry but some of you may be stumped when it comes to actually organizing it. The solution of yesteryears was to use drawer divider inserts of varying sizes to house jewelry - which in case you’re wondering, still works fantastically. Today’s girl, however, is opting for a more eclectic, DIY solution. Now we want our jewelry storage to reflect our style as much as our actual baubles. From utilizing traditional wall hooks to vintage tea cups, there are several creative ways to display some of our finer things in life.

Above picture depicts the traditional wall hook.

Stack your arm parties using paper towel holders or old bottles.

Shallow dishes are perfect for easy access.

Displaying rings in a bed of uncooked rice allows for added cushion and guaranteed placement.

The classic ring holder may never go out of style.

For a little bit of chic and a touch of vintage, tea cups can provide the perfect placeholder for both earrings and bracelets.

                                     1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

I’ve accepted a job in Chicago at Starcom as the Associate Human Experience Strategist on the Procter & Gamble account!

In a nutshell: I’ll help unearth brand-relevant consumer insights and develop media strategies and plans that will resonate with the target. (Advertising folk, Human Experience Strategists are essentially the account planners of the media world.)

I report to work three weeks from today. Until then, I’ll be at home in Collierville, reading, cooking, seeing friends and spending some time at the Justine office. And finding an apartment from afar. Oh, that.

Stay tuned for my adventures in the Windy City!

Some interesting research into what happens when we really empathize with a character in a fictional story:

Geoff Kaufman, our very own postdoctoral researcher, has just published his work on the effects of immersive fictional narrative on an individual’s behavior in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His research (with Lisa Libby, OSU) is attracting a lot of attention due to its potential for social change. In the series of studies, Geoff examined what happened to people who felt “experience-taking” while reading a fictional story. ”Experience-taking” is a phenomenon that occurs when readers find themselves feeling the emotions, thoughts, beliefs and internal responses of one of the characters as if they were their own. Geoff and his research team found that for certain situations, “experience-taking” can lead to behavioral or attitudinal changes in the readers.

According to Kaufman, when people are able to forget about themselves, their own self-concept, and self-identity while reading, they merge their own lives with those of the characters they’re reading about. ”You have to be able to take yourself out of the picture, and really lose yourself in the book in order to have this authentic experience of taking on a character’s identity, ” argues Kaufman. For example, researchers found in one experiment that most college students were unable to undergo experience-taking if they were reading in a cubicle with a mirror.

The researchers argue that sharing a group membership with a character from a story told in first-person voice facilitates the “experience-taking” of the character’s life events. After, the act of experience-taking can affect the individuals for days afterwards. The researchers argue that experience-taking is different from perspective-taking, in which readers may understand what the character is experience while maintaining a separate sense of self. The act of experience-taking is much more immersive, and unconsciously replaces the self with the character.

(Via Grand Text Auto)

Looks like “Changing Beliefs and Behavior through Experience-Taking” will be the first academic article I’ve read since finishing my graduate coursework! I’d be curious to see how “experience-taking” over time shapes our own self-conceptions, in addition to our short-term behavior.

Kendall and I made DIY Sparkle Sneakers during our late-night...

Kendall and I made DIY Sparkle Sneakers during our late-night crafting session Tuesday night. Check out the tutorial on the Justine website! (Thanks, Kenn, for modeling the shoes each step of the way.)

washingtonpoststyle:

I chose to support Sonia, a 20-year-old mother of two from Tetela, Mexico, who needs a loan of $550 to buy ingredients for her snack business. (Of course I contributed to someone who makes empanadas, fried bananas, gorditas, tortas and tamales!) Before you donate, you can get to know Sonia and the other entrepreneurs here.
